Cold, snow plague Europe

Snow in a London, UK park, 01 Dec 10

Winter has arrived a few weeks early in normally balmy Europe with snow and cold temperatures wreaking havoc with planes, trains and automobiles.

Several major airports have been forced to close – London Gatwick, Scotland’s Edinburgh Airport, Frankfurt, Germany, Lyon-Bron in southeastern France and Geneva, Switzerland were all shuttered as staff struggled to clear snow from runways.

Temperatures have plunged as low as -24 C in Moscow, -26 C in parts of Poland, -20 in the Scottish Highlands and even -15 C in Orleans, France south of Paris.

Reports say at least eight people have died in the cold weather so far.
