Florida freeze threatens citrus

Florida fruit and vegetable crops managed to survive a freezing night thanks to irrigation and cold temperatures which occurred mainly during morning daylight hours.

Many citrus growers in the Sunshine State tried to get as much fruit off the trees as possible before the freeze but many varieties weren’t ripe and there wasn’t enough time to pick.

Citrus is in the most danger when temperatures stay below -2 C at night for more than four hours.

Temperatures dropped to -2 C at Orlando this morning, zero as far south as West Palm Beach and it fell to 2 C at Miami Beach.
