Storm batters Maritimes

Stormy seas at Pointe-du-Chene, NB, 05 Oct 2011 (FB)

A fierce fall storm enveloped much of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia today with soaking rain and strong gusty winds.

Winds gusting as high as 70 km/h at Greater Moncton Airport, even higher at East Point, PEI with a gust of 94 km/h, swelled seas and prompted storm surge warnings along the Northumberland Strait coastline.

Thousands also lost power by midday due to strong winds bringing down branches and lines but many of those outages had been restored by late afternoon.

UPDATE: Greater Moncton saw 25 mm of rain and a peak wind gust of 67 km/h.
