Historic snow, cold grip Texas

A cold Arctic air mass has enveloped much of the central United States and has sunk as far south as northern Mexico.

The entire state of Texas was under winter storm warnings over the weekend which is something forecasters couldn’t recall in decades.

Snow and ice pellets even fell along the normally balmy Gulf Coast with Galveston getting a blanket of white for the first time in a dozen years.

While up to 30 cm of snow fell in some areas, major cities like Austin, San Antonio and Dallas got 10-15 cm which aren’t equipped to handle it.

These cities saw their coldest lows since December 1989 on Monday (15 Feb):

  • Oklahoma City -21°C
  • Dallas -15°C
  • Houston -8°C

The wind has made it feel even colder with wind chills dipping into the -30s in states like Kansas and Missouri.

To make matters worse, millions in Texas have lost electricity as the power grid struggles to keep up with an overwhelming demand amid the cold.
